Is perception all that it takes to really maitain change? I really think that it has a lot to do with it. I think that perception would be one of the greatest spiritual gifts that we could ever have. The basic foundation of my thinking is that when the eyes are filled with light the whole body is filled with light also. When I have perspective, the stumbling blocks in my life become stepping stones, the savior is not a rock of offense, but my salvation. It seems to me that if I were to maintain percpective satan would be as threatening to me as a small kitten. With the percpective of a Peter, who was known as the lion, I would be able to follow Christ upon the water, and carry my cross like peter did. Like Peter, I would be able to change from someone who is willing to deny the savior thrice before the cock crowed, to being able to give my own life in defense against truth and virtue. My Grandpa was the temple president in the Bountiful Temple just recently. He said that the main thing that the templed did for him was give him percpective. I am learning how important percepective is, and I am wanting to learn better ways to maintain pure and perfect percpective on life.

I would like to practice determining the pro’s and cons to my argument
Audience: Black people in Utah
Watco: Allowing a less intelligent black student admittance to a university over a more qualified white student simply because of affirmative action laws.
Pros
This will allow for different ideas and opinions into the world, rather than a white dominate standard
Allows for social barriers to be broken between whites and blacks
It helps blacks overcome the social barriers than inhibit their success in their jobs
This allows for a chance to safeguard against racist admissions personnel
Cons
People should be judged according to the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
This is hampering the growth of a black person in the long run, because they will be underqualified in their school, and lower their self esteem
They will always wonder if they got in because of their skin and not their smarts
Their expectations for themselves will be lower, because they will always have a scapegoat when they fail, and will blame it on the racist professors, etc.
It back fires and causes reverse racism by not allowing the white kids an equal chance to get into the university they desire.

We just got out of class, and we talked about affirmative action. I was surprised how different people’s opinions were. Some people were saying that racism didn’t exist at all anymore, while others were saying that segregation was just as strong today as it was from the beginning. This was a real eye opener to me because, I tend to not notice real forms of racism at all. I am of the opinion that bringing up racism issues, at least in Utah, is just beating a dead dog. We are done; any attention is going to just make things worse. But, at the same time, it is interesting how there were others that fought opinions like mine pretty passionately. I was glad to see her speaking up. I am guessing that she believes there is racism today because she is part of the non-white minority. She is forced to notice race a lot more. Who am I to be making the laws or having an opinion of something I really don’t have to face all that much. At the same time, there were people who were included in the minority that shared the same exact opinions that I do. So, in Utah, I would say that it is more a personal complex, or insecurity, or stereotyping, rather than racism.

An old man walks through a lush cluster of trees
And wonders how they grow with such mystical ease
A warm whisper he hears, or was it a thought
We trees can show you what men should be taught.
The shortly passed storm was not easy to take
The winds did howl and some branches did brake,
The rain fell hard and flooded our grounds,
But what would you do to turn trials around
We captured that water to strengthen our health
The branches we used and turned waste into wealth
We could be angry as most men we see are,
But we choose to welcome the life-giving scars
All men go through storms in a similar way,
But good men are those who can flourish through pain
It's easy for bad men to look good in the sun
But it’s the storms that define who’s lost and who’s won.

Good Moods or Good Men
An old man walks through a lush cluster of trees
And wonders how it flourishes with such mystical ease
At once a faint whisper he hears from breeze
If you wait just a moment, we can answer your pleas
The storm just yesterday was not easy to take
The wind did howl and some branches did brake,
The rain fell hard and flooded our grounds,

I am going to analyze my Paper on Sex Ed. In South Africa
First of all, I think that my essay is awesome. I was going for more of the Logos and Ethos approach, and barely touched on an appeal to emotion, since my audience was the African Governance. My introduction was slightly an appeal to emotion, because it talked about how a Government official lost his son to the HIV virus. Obviously thousands are affected by this virus every year, but using just one person, and being the son of a government official makes it an appeal to the emotions of the other government officials as well. I used a lot of research from journals, such as how many people in Africa compared to the rest of the world get HIV through sexual transmission. The flowing logic was that the African people individually were too afraid of talking about such a stigmatized subject to there children. There needed to be a outer control, the government, that would institute public programs that educated the population on the dangers and the precautions of HIV. To conclude I stated the enthymeme, which was Introducing South African children at an earlier age to sex education will decrease the spread of HIV because teaching children at an earlier age will increase awareness and prepare them to fight against conformities of having unsafe sex.

I would like to practice clarity:
here is an experience I wrote to my family. I am going to make it more clear.
Recently I went to Jerusalem and had an incredible experience that I wanted to share with you all. I was struggling with a lot at the time (the good old struggles of life). We went to Galilee and spent nine days living on the shore, studying our scriptures and visiting the places that Christ visited. One of the first days we were there they drove us to Mt Arbel, which is the tallest mountain that is right on the edge of the sea. Because of these high hills and mountains surrounding Galilee there are extremely harsh winds that make is impossible to sail a small boat in the stormy seas. While I was on the mountain my mind turned to the time when Christ calmed the raging sea. "And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." (Mark 4:37-39).
I had wondered if the lord cared how I was really struggling. I also wanted to ask him, "carest thou not that I perish." He seemed silent to me at the time, but there on the Mt Arbel I felt the Lord ask me to recall what I had gone through. I did. I thought of every doubt and struggle I had been going through, and one by one I felt his words resonate in my heart saying, "Peace be still." He can calm the raging tempest of our lives. He can also cause us to arise and walk, spiritually, like he did physically to the lame man. He can give us sight, and raise us from the dead. He is the great Healer. He must be for all of us. We must experience the healing power of the Savior. I now we can.

I like intense people. Maybe that is because I am intense too. What is an intense person? It is someone that tends to think deeper or more often about people, or things, than most people. I know people who are just fine with how life is, and don't really need to explore certain realms of reality. They are just dandy picking daisies. But, then there are other people that I know that can't help but search for things that could possibly be more beautiful than a daisy. Thoughts. They like to pick people's thoughts until they have come away with a beautiful bouquet of unexplored opinions and ideas. It seems like they push themselves more than the average person to become better. It is true that the intense person usually has deeper lows than the average shmoa, but they are the ones that take a hit for the team, because they elevate those around them more than others. Why do I consider myself an intense person? Because I know that I am different. I know what I am capable of, and how far I am willing to go. It feels weird to write those things. I don't think that being intense all the time is very healthy. In fact, it will drive you crazy if you are. I write about this because I want to develop a better understanding of who I am, why I am, and when I am. Learning who I am is essential in my progression to becoming someone more. Knowing why I am helps me to more quickly escalate to higher levels of motivation and purpose. Knowing when I am the way I want to be, and the way I don't want to be helps me better channel the direction I want to consistently be going.

I would like to practice the steps of revision: I will do this on one of the papers I’ve written.
One of the problems with my paper is that I am mentioning a problem with my own argument in the paper. This was supposed to be a good thing. I was trying to bring up counter arguments so that I could create credibility by showing how their argument didn’t hold water after all. Regretfully, it didn’t come across that way, I just seemed to have weakend my own argument. Secondly, I created one argument that wasn’t very strong, and seemed a little naïve. I was thinking of doing more research to better my argument, but instead I think that I am just going to cut it out completely. I don’t think it is salvageable.
I think I could also just tighten up my presentation, through reworking my wording and bettering my order. I actually hadn’t thought of looking through my essay for fixing the order of presentation. Also, in regards to reworking it, I will read it and watch for clarity, emphasis, tone, etc. I think I kepted a good tone, but my voice seems a little muffled; by that I mean that my points are just underdeveloped. That is a major thing I want to work on, developing my points. This will probably require some extra research.

Why am I always forgetting to do these papers. I am really hurting now. I know that you were setting this up to help us, but it beginning to really hurt me because I always forget to do them on the right day. I thought of a good way to do this writting assignment. You should have all three due at the end of the week, instead of one due every two days. That way, if I do forget one day, I can have a little bit of cushion for later. I think that that would make a big difference.
So, back to my thoughts on change. I have recently learned that one of the biggest tools to actually change is to just keep pressing forward. I have been studying change since july. I am a OB geek and I am always looking for ways to better an organization, or individual. If I can learn how to teach people to change, then it will be a lot easier to point them in the right direction for what ever they want to change specifically. I am hoping that by teaching a man to fish I won't have to help them change every little thing they do. I admit, this is more on the individual level rather than the group level. I am far more interested in the individual change.

I would like to practice using verbs and nouns for my description, and adjectives and adverbs only when necessary.
Escape. My back numbs while my front thaws in front of the fire. The scene is picturesque. My closest friends tightly frame the fire and act as heaters for my frigid arms. Water is still dripping off our swim suits, yet the towels remain in the back of the car. The fire keeps everyone from going to get the towels, but even more than that, the warmth of the experience seems to pacify their discomfort. Everyone there has waited all year for these favored moments. It is tradition to jump into the glacier water in the middle of the night and then sit around the fire and swap funny, scary, and everything-in-between stories. I can’t imagine a better explanation of an escape from homework and stress. I look over the heads of those in front of me and watch the sun set behind the pine tree covered mountains in Montana. Everyone’s voices seem to be the soundtrack to my favorite show. Escape
I feel like this is becoming a redundant way that I write. I like that it is visual, but I think some readers would want to gag at how flowery is sounds. So, Professor Esplin, if you could give me feed back on how I can make this sound less flowery that would be great. Thanks

I am compiling a book of my family’s experiences. It is focused on spiritual experiences that they have had and it includes one experience from every brother, sister, aunt, uncle, cousin, grandma and grandpa. It has been great reading these experiences and a pain trying to get my family to participate in this project. After a while I start to feel like I am being obnoxious and pushy, but it is something I really feel passionate about right now, and while I still have the momentum I need to push with all I have got.
It is interesting how much more effective we are when there is passion. Why can’t school be more like that? I love getting projects that I really love to do. Recently I have really started to love writing. I guess I have liked writing for years now, but I feel more driven to produce writing that will make a difference. I want to write in order to impact others lives. This is one reason I wanted to take the persuasive writing class. I have learned a ton on how to write better quality persuasive essays. It has been really fun, and it is also one of my passions.

After a tiring journey he tastes the fruit. It is the most desirable and delicious fruit he has ever tasted. It fills his body with a warmth, and then a joy, that seems to start from the center of his core and expands outwards. The toll the journey took on the traveler simply increases the value of the prize; the sacrifice bestows its rewards; his joy exceeds that of his pain. But something glimmers and shines out of the corner of his eyes. At first, only faintly does he see it. He turns to get a better look. In awe, his mouth drops open as his eyes climb the extravagant walls of this great edifice. The spires stand tall and majestic. It looks as if it were a palace, placed on the highest point of the world. The people inside are reveling in their own greatness. It all seems so pleasurable, seductive, attractive, and exciting. The joy of the fruit quickly fades away from his memory. Yet, something inside of him warns against this place. The voice pierces quietly, and feels so calming that he begins to turn away from the building. Then another, much louder, sound breaks the silence. The noise blares from the building. He looks and sees that the whole multitude has all turned and stands looking down at him, pointing at him, and mocking him. He was completely alone and weak. Never had he felt so embarrassed or ashamed. He wanted to hide. The fruit slips from his fingers. His desire to belong, to be with the throng of scoffers is unbearable. Passion and lust finally take the reigns to the coach of his consciousness. He tramples over the fruit as he races after Satan’s deceitfully decorated dungeon where he will stay the rest of his days as a prisoner bound by unbreakable chains of despair and pain. Who is this man? No, not me. Never!

Time passes. Spiritual strides seem to have been made. I am King of the whole Nation. A Righteous Kingdom, a Righteous King. The Lord has prospered my hand. He has enlightened my mind. My influence is great over all the land. On the Balcony, I take a moment to soak it all in under the stars. It's a warm night. I notice that no one is around, yet I hear water splashing. My ears lead my eyes to the source of the noise. A woman bathing. I look. The look leads to lust, the lust leads to darker paths. Blood is spilt, and in a moment that seems all to fast, I am alone. All is lost. I wake up in a cold sweat and see myself back in Provo. No, it wasn’t me, it was only a nightmare. But the memory, the dream, was so real. I shutter one last time before snapping fully back into reality. The scripture comes to mind, “awake my soul, no longer droop in sin, rejoice oh my heart, and give place no more to the enemy of my soul.” Nephi knew something that allowed him to wake up before the nightmare became a reality. The shadows of a setting sun dim on David’s eyes while hope appears to dawn upon Nephi and bring light into his face. The more I think about this concept of “change”, the more apparent it is that perspective on our potential is the power to our progress.
I wan to practice recognizing types of styles for different types of audiences
Businessmen : I would want to write using more logical arguments rather than emotional. I would push numbers. They aren’t interested in the little things. If I wanted to push businessmen to protect our environment, I would have to do a really good job showing how it would really benefit them in the long run. I wouldn’t talk about a little squirrel that died because of toxic waste. I would also push a more formal voice.
Church members: I would use a lot of emotional arguments. I would boost credibility by quoting general authorities. I would use much more personal experience. I would probably even try to use the scriptures. I think I would still keep a formal voice, but probably a little less formal that a business audience.
Family members: I would probably go into a lot of personal experiences. I would use an informal voice. I could probably be more direct, because my family members trust me more than other audiences. I would play off emotional arguments the most, because I know what they are most sensitive to.
President of the United States: I would use a lot of Logos. I would build credibility by quoting from patriotic references: Former Presidents, The Constitution of independence, etc. I would also quote from others from their particular party. I think that I could use an array of logos, pathos, and ethos in these arguments.

I will am going to do a rhetorical analysis on this image. This is obviously asking for peace as it’s message. The audience, well I think it has something to do with people in the Middle East. You see children, that look like they are from that area. One of the kids is wearing a Kippa, or a yamica. This makes me think that we are talking about the Palestinian/ Israeli conflict. The interesting thing is that the word “waging” has the more of a fight connotation rather than anything else. So saying “waging peace” is a powerful word choice. Also, the picture is of children, which does a lot rhetorically, shows how the wars are effecting the innocent. It is also showing real faces. Rather than showing a large mob it shows real people. They do this to make the people at conflict evaluate what they are really doing. The war isn’t about controversial issues, it’s about people. The children are also smiling. They says that they will be a lot happier if they promote peace. These children, which are innocent, are taking a stand. It is as if, even though they don’t have the wisdom that comes from experience, they can see clearly that it is important to just promote peace.

After a long journey he finally tastes the fruit. He feels the love of God. It is the most desirable and delicious fruit he has ever tasted. As he eats it, it fills his body with a warmth, and then a joy, that seems to start from the center of his core and expands outwards. The journey has been worth it, the sacrifice bestows its rewards. But something glimmers and shines out of the corner of his eyes. At first, only faintly does he see it. He turns to get a better look. In awe, his mouth drops open as his eyes climb the extravagant walls of this great edifice. The spires stand tall and majestic. It seems to be a palace placed on the highest point of the world. The people inside are reveling in their own greatness. It all seems so pleasurable, seductive, attractive, and exciting. The joy of the fruit quickly is forgotten. Something inside of him warns against this place. It is quiet, and so calming that he begins to turn away from the building. Then another, much louder, sound breaks the silence. It is coming from the building. He looks and sees that the whole multitude has all turned and is looking down at him, mocking him, pointing at him. He was completely alone and weak. Never had he felt so embarrassed. He wanted to hide. He was ashamed. He let the fruit slip from his fingers. His desire to belong, to be with the throng of scoffers is unbearable. He feels out of control. He tramples over the fruit as he lust after Satan’s deceitful, decorated dungeon where he will stay the rest of his days as a prisoner bound by unbreakable chains of despair and pain. Who is this man? No, not me. Never!

I am practicing writing an introduction
He holds his briefcase like a worn out baseball glove. Same tie, same shirt, same everything. He goes to work for his last day, as if it was like any other day. Like clock work, he has raised his baby into a grown self sustaining business. He sits down at his desk and quickly starts the last of his projects. He has worked hard. He remembers the long nights he sat in this chair wishing he could be at his son's soccer game, but knowing that what he was doing was necissary for jonny's well being, he slaved away anyways. He had always provided for his family so well. The day ends. He looks back and says good bye as if the office were able to feel the loss of its Father, and 35 year companion. At home. He wakes up, puts a tie on and sits at the table. He waits. Where is everyone. "Hello?" No one answers. All alone he sits. He calls his family. They look at the caller ID. Its not coming up as "unknown". They let it ring. He calls again. They pick up, but it is too difficult to meet together. Their work wont let them get out to take a visit. Suddently, he wonders why he worked so hard to give them what they would end up spending in such a little time. He always thought he was such a good investor. He was wrong.

One of the most amazing speeches of our day, one of the most influential discourses in our country is Martin Luther King Jr.’s, “I Have a Dream Speech.” This speech is what I want to analyze for my rhetorical analysis. His audience, is the entire country. His WATCO is equality of all races, and religions, and peoples and the American country. His credit is that he is black, he is also a man of faith, as a Reverend in Christendom. His appeal to emotion was incredibly set by how he used such imagery and parallelism in his speech. He would say phrases over and over, such as, “100 years later,” “Now is the time,” “We can never be satisfied,” “Let freedom ring,” and of course, “ I have a dream.” He also uses power words, such as, Liberty, justice, brotherhood, etc, to propagate his message and strengthen his argument. He also uses imagery and alagories that carry emotion along with his message. He individualizes the message by talking about his own children being able to be judged by the content of their hearts rather than the color of their skin. He says that he wants a “Nigro in Mississippi” to be able to vote and a “Nigro in Alabama” to have something to vote for. He establishes logical arguments and authority by quoting the documents that Americans hold as most authoritative. He quotes the constitution of independence, he quotes our National anthem, and he quotes the emancipation proclamation. I love this speech!

Honesty. Can one lie to someone else, without lying to himself as well? It seems to me that if someone has lied to someone else without lying to themselves, then they are simply mistaken, and not lying at all. Where do these lies begin in the first place? Self justification and self deception is the beginning of the lies. Lying is self motivated but not self beneficial in the long run. Lying is a virus that can spread and corrupt the soul faster than any cancer to the body. But before dishonesty can exist outside of someone it must first infect the host. The Savior taught, “the truth will make you free.” So where is the jump from feeling the joy of telling the truth to living a lie that leaves you utterly empty? My wife is still asleep. Only I hear the baby crying. My first impulse is to hurry and get up and take care of him before he wakes my wife up. Instead I succumb to wanting to go back to sleep. Then I think about how I have to get up a lot earlier than she does because of the important meetings I have at work the next day. Why isn’t she getting up? Its her job to take care of the baby in the first place. She is so lazy sometimes. The cycle of lies continue. In order to begin the lies, I needed to first deceive myself. In essence, I have intoxicated my self of my own volition. Self deception has led to self betrayal.

It is a mystery that I have always wanted to unfold. I had felt the sensation only once in my life. Only once was there that type of momentum. It was like waiting, seemingly for a life time, on a slow almost motionless river for the actual burst of speed; the break of the slow stream to the rush of the rapids. Change. Returning from Italy with my worn out shoes and white shirt turned yellow with sweat, I had just come out of a level six rapid called my mission. Barely alive, I had never felt so good. Two and a half years later, I wonder if I will ever see rapids like that again. It seems like I have been sitting in a sea of still waters with no wind of change ever to propel me forward. My sail totters back and forth waving, waiting monotonously for any glimpse of gust or gale. I sit waiting in a lonely sail boat waiting, painful waiting. Reaching its mast as high as it can for any help from higher winds, the sails ache for any sign of opportunity to open wide their sailcloth and break this stillness with a majestic momentum that gets faster and faster, with beautiful bursts of speed, thrashing through the water, making perceivable, awaited progress. If only that would be the case! I crave this change, I hunger and thirst for it. The growling of my impatience gets stronger and stronger; my patience parched and dried out. Why can't I change any faster? It's a mystery I want to unfold.

Technique
I really had a hard time thinking what technique I should do. So, I decided to practice pulling out the rhetoric behind a recent conference talk just given.
I will be picking apart President Hinckley's Priesthood session talk on Anger. First, the ethos that he uses is evident. He is the president of the Church, and so is therefore the mouth piece of God. The screen keeps showing that he is the President of the church, so it reinforces the authority of what he is saying. He also appeals to emotion by his jokes, and clever stories. He spoke of a time when he was being yelled at and he just started laughing at the man that was yelling at him. Soon they were both laughing, and the conflict was resolved, but the fact that he used a playful emotion is persuasive. He also gave logical arguments that made people want to avoid being angry. One was that, happy is the man who can let offensive comments slide off him. Another argument that he uses is tricky for me, but I believe that this also appeals to authority, when he said to not ever lose control of our anger he says, " let wisdom's voice control." First, it appeals to authority because he was quoting someone (as if he really needs to quote someone for his ethos to go up), but it may also appeal to logic because logically people want to be wise, and therefore it is better to let wisdom's voice to control over anger's.

The lyrics to the song "Live like you were dying:" http://www.dapslyrics.com/friendly.php?sid=6116
His audience is anyone and everyone. His argument is that we all need to live putting all the important things in life first. He says that we do that by living like we are dying. There is obviously a lot pathos in this song rather then ethos and logos, but there is a little of the others too. He talked about not being the father he could be if he were to simply put things in order of importance. I don't think that he is trying to convince us to go sky diving, but rather that is the example of just enjoying life. It is more symbolic of excitement. This is a play off of the emotions. This is parallel with rocky mountain climbing and riding a wild bull for 2.7 seconds.
He also plays off of the emotion of being good and penitent. This is done by examples of being the husband he should have been, giving forgiveness, and being a true friend. The ethos is in here. He begins by looking at the x-rays of a doctor. This is again symbolic, but it plays off the reality of the fact that the doctor tells us that we are sick, or that we have however so much time to live. This man was automatically submitted to the authority of that man, as we need to submit to the fact that life is short and we need to live like "tomorrow was a gift and you had eternity to think about what you would do with it." I think that does have some play on emotion too, but there was a slight play on authority as well.

It was my first time going to a hospital this weekend. I can't remember if I have been before, but it definetly felt foreign to me this time. I have twelve nephews and neices, and for every one I have been out of the country when they have been born. Yesterday was my first time getting to see them while they were still in the hospital.
It felt like trying to break into a prison. I had to get on the fourth floor, but I didn't know that you had to get permission to get on, so when I met my first blockade, I just waited for someone to open the locked door, and I just followed behind them. After I realized that I should have probably just asked permission, I avoided eye contact with any employee that worked at the hospital. To my shagrin I couldn't find the room my brother and sister-in-law were in, so I had to ask a nurse.
When I finally got there, my sister-in-law looked so tired and weak, she wasn't wearing make-up, which was a first for me to see. She handed me the baby, and I was shocked to see that the baby actually looked very beautiful. I have never liked new born babies. They always look like lizards when they are first born. They change colors every five seconds, and their body just wobbles around all the time. But this baby was different. He was all proportioned, his head was nicely shaped. He was a good human color. It was an amazing experience.

(sorry about the long address)
This painting is of Napoleon Bonaparte. This painting is very much a propaganda piece. In reality Napoleon did his famous crossing of the alps on a mule, but in this piece he is on a noble steed. Because I'm not sure the date of the painting I'm not sure the audience. But if it was a modern painting I would say it was a call to join with napoleon, but my guess is that is was after the actual battle, and its argument was that napoleon was leading a great cause. It shows that by him being the one pointing all on ward. His face is confident. The credibility is established by his decor. He looks extremely regal and as I said before, he is riding a beautiful horse. The horse itself almost looks happy to be there. Not only does the horse look happy, but also very healthy and strong. This seems to point out that there are provisions and success, and that they are prospering. The fact that napoleon is kicked back on his horse probably ignites the viewer with the passion of the cause. It almost feels like there is so much enthusiasm that he is going to gallop the whole way there. I also noticed that the wind is blowing in their direction, as if God himself was pushing them onward.

How in the world does dating work! Everyone pretends that dating someone just for their looks is wrong, yet all I see every day on BYU campus is guys and girls checking each other out; like choosing a cake for the special weekend party. Looks play a big role, and there's no getting around it. Its weird that a good looking girl to me can be different than a good looking girl to my roomate. Overall, dating is really wierd. Trying to get married is even worse. Its like being stuck in a clothing store called BYU, and all you do is glaze over one weird outfit after another.
I was sitting in the library a week ago, and I tell myself that I need to get girl's number to go on a date this next week (FYI:This is going through every guys head at BYU). What am I supposed to do, without feeling really shallow. I immediately start looking for the most beautiful girl I can. Girls can't judge guys for this because they are the same way, but they just deny it more then guys. So, I'm cake shopping. This beautiful girl passes me. She is leaving the library. I'm still on my computer and I have all my homework out. I know that if I don't take my chance with her I'm going to regret it later. I close all of my open windows on my computer, log out, and start trying to catch up with this girl. I remembered seeing her a couple times on campus and thinking that I needed to ask her out. But what in the world are you supposed to say! In one conversation I am supposed to convince her that I am trustworthy, funny, and all the other 25 qualities that she is looking for in a cake. The conversation begins. Me, "Didn't you go spring summer in on campus." Great, now she thinks I'm a stocker. Her, "Ya...." Me, "I thought so, you are one of those people that I would see every time I came on campus, you know those types of people?" She's probably thinking, "ya, that's what we call a stocker." But she smiled and said, "Ya, I know what your talking about." The ice was broken. It was a miracle. The conversations became very cliche'. The conversation ended, and I got her number. An every day, unescapable experience on BYU campus.

I am analysing the managers of summer sales in regards to selling satilite dishes.
I had a conversation this week that involved a variety of rhetorical techniques. First they began by trying to be really good friends, really interested in what I was doing. This was followed by a flood of complements. It seemed very fake to me. The new found friend then inquired about what my plans were for the next summer. I laughed and said that I had just finished this summer and wasn't quite mapped out that far. They then began to introduce me to the idea of selling satilites in Chicago.
From this point already, I have seen the relationship being developed as "peer." The compliments were used to apeal to my ego, trying to win me over. But now they take a different stance. They begin to tell me about all the possibilities of how much money I can actually earn. They told me that their friend make around 90 thousand dollars in just a few months. This was an appeal to the logic. What they didn't tell me, was how much they would make off of me if I worked for them. I just happened to know that on my own. Their overall arguement was that working for them would be the best thing I could do in the summer because it would make me the most money possible. It was slightly persuasive. I did need the money, so I was definitly fitting in their audience. I was simply shocked at how easily it was to detect the use of rhetoric in these peoples arguements. It was just oosing with usages of ethos, pathos and logos.

This semester has been extremely difficult, and its only been two weeks. I've almost been kicked out of the major that I wanted. I almost lost my job. I almost lost the girl of my dreams. The most interesting thing though is that I am getting really close to God these days. Is there a connection? I think so.
My major is potentially the communications major. I really want to get in, but I just found out that I have too many credits. This is so scary because I spent an entire semester taking all the courses required to get in, and now after all that I might be denied access simply because I have too many credit hours. This is understandable from the admissions perspective; they want timely graduation. From my side, its ridiculous. I want the major I have worked so hard to get into. But today I talked with the admissions committee and they have been willing to help me a little, and even dropped some of the credit hours that I have accumulated.
I almost lost my job because ever since school has started, my schedule has not fit what they have been wanting from me. To be perfectly honest, I might lose my job still. Literally, all these things I am writing about are still potentially ready to detonate at any time.
This girl I have really been interested in has acted like she hasn't been interested for a month, so I finally decided to just forget about her, but now she is asking me on dates. So, I don't know where I'm at with that either.
But like I said before, I am getting really close to the lord, and he is helping me so much
My major is potentially the communications major.

Four different Enthymemes:
(inlcuding explanation of target audience and assumptions)
Cartoons are destroying our future because cartoons are draining the intellegence of your children.
This enthymeme is targeted to parents who let their children watch cartoons. The assumption is that because cartoons are draining the intellegence of parent's children our future is being destroyed.
Being outgoing increases your ability to be successful because being outgoing increases your social capital
This enthymem is targeted to shy people that want to be successful. The assumptions is that having more social capital increases your ability to be more successful.
Old people that don't stop working will can maintain a stronger influence on society because old people that don't stop working keep their mental awarness and sanity longer
My target audience are old people that retire and want to stop working. My assumption is that old people who keep their mental awareness longer can have a stronger influence on society.
People who pay their tithing actually have better finances because people who pay their tithing learn how to better budget their money
My target audience are members of the LDS church who don't pay tithing. My assumption is that those who better budget their money will have better finances.

First look at this ad: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ljsX3I7xUu0
This advertisement is claiming that John West Salmon is the best salmon, therefore you should eat it. Its audience is people who like to eat salmon. Its target is people who are looking for the best and appreciate fresh quality salmon. It creates its credibility in a commical way. First it says that the bears catch the tastiest and most tender salmon, which is true in real life. Then they get a man dressed up as a professional fisherman also producing ethos. They create comical credibility that they are willing to fight a bear to get the best fish possible. They also only took one fish, which means they are hand picking the best fish too. This commercial also targets our emotions, obviously by being funny. The fact that a bear and a fishermen are fighting like the three stooges makes you remember the add more then if they were to tell you in a boring fashion why their salmon was the best. We also feel the fisherman’s pain. They even say, “John West endures the worst to bring you the best.” They want you to know how hard it was to get this. This is either to feel sorry for the fishermen, or to see the value and sacrifice it took to bring you the very best.

anything I want to write
Persuasion is something that I have been interested in my whole life. Ever since I was little I have wanted to learn how to better persuade my brother to want to clean my room and do my dishes. As I got into high school I was reading books like “How to win friends and influence people”, and trying to figure out how to persuade people to like me. When I got on my mission it was all about persuasion. I remember a distinct experience when my Mission President taught me how to persuade my companion how to work harder. He pointed out the verse in D&C 121 that says, “No power or influence can or ought to be maintained only by persuasion….” Since I have been home from my mission I have wanted to find a way to take this method of persuasion into my career. With this background, I thought it would be interesting to tell you about how I decided my profession.
I have changed my major several times. I have always thought that I would like to go into business because that is what my dad does. He is an amazing man who is passionate about his business. I decided it would be smart to work for him. So, when I got off my mission that is what I did. I surprised myself at how well I did in sales. I became the National Sales Representative for the company. It was fun, but very soon I got sick of asking people if they would be interested in buying these specially designed papers that my dad’s company produced. I also got a job at the MTC. I absolutely loved teaching there, but I didn’t really enjoy teaching my mission language. I just liked teaching how to teach. But even though this was a real signal, I still couldn’t decide. Believe it or not, my decision was made in a very interesting way.
I did a study abroad in Jerusalem. It was an amazing experience. After going on an incredible field trip one of the days we were there everyone was exhausted. I remember everyone going to bed really early. For some reason though, I decided that I should stay up. I remembered that the CES fireside by Elder Bednar had just recently been given. So, I got on the Internet and listened to the talk. Looking back, the most spiritual part of the talk for me was the part before Elder Bednar even started speaking. The man that introduced Elder Bednar introduced Elder Bednar and mentioned that he had gotten his masters in Business and his Doctorate in organizational behavior. The spirit immediately bore powerful testimony that I was supposed to do that very same thing. I knew that that was my course.
Since that experience I knew that I was going to teach as a Professor at a University and Consult on the side. I wanted to teach Business Management skills, in particularly how to teach people to lead. In essence, I want to live at higher level, through school and through their work. I could talk about this forever, but I’ve already written too much.
